Diabetes mellitus in dogs 

Although the characteristic symptoms of diabetes mellitus are much the same in cats and dogs, the latter can have one of three types of diabetes.

Certain breeds like the poodle, the beagle, the miniature pinscher or the dachshund are considered to have a predisposition to diabetes mellitus. Showing itself two to three times more frequent in females than in males and especially in non-castrated females, obesity and hormonal variations favor its onset.

Diabetes mellitus in cats

In cats, diabetes mellitus is in most cases a combination of type II and III diabetes. More common in females than in males here again, it more regularly affects felines between the ages of 6 and 10 and obesity is undoubtedly a contributing factor.

What are the symptoms of diabetes mellitus in cats and dogs?

Among the symptoms that should attract attention in both cats and dogs are :

Treatment of diabetes mellitus in dogs and cats

For the majority of cats and dogs, the treatment of diabetes is, as in humans, by giving insulin injections subcutaneously in the morning and evening. Given 12 hours apart and generally well accepted by the animal, these injections allow them to prevent episodes of hyperglycemia.
